Before you begin: Identify the device and its job before choosing a download. Receiver support and transceiver CAT are separate.

Frequently Used Programs

A quick reference to frequently used station and amateur radio programs. Each program name opens its official website for documentation and downloads. Choose the tools for your task; a first SDR receive setup does not require installing this whole list.

Program / Official WebsiteMain RoleWhat It Helps You Do
NetLogger ↗Nets and check-insView participating nets and shared check-in information; useful for following a net’s operating order.
N1MM Logger+ ↗Contest loggingLog contest contacts, track exchanges and support a configured contest operating workflow.
GridTracker ↗Maps and contact awarenessDisplay WSJT-X activity and logged contacts on a map, with grid, callsign and award-tracking tools.
SDR Console ↗SDR operationOperate supported external SDR receivers with configurable spectrum/waterfall displays, filtering, recording and multiple software receivers within hardware limits.
Virtual Serial Ports Emulator (VSPE) ↗Virtual COM portsCreate virtual serial connections and supported sharing arrangements for applications exchanging radio-control data.
Omni-Rig ↗Transceiver CAT controlProvide a common radio-control interface for compatible applications, using the appropriate rig definition and serial settings.
WSJT-X ↗Weak-signal digital modesEncode and decode FT8 and other supported digital modes, using the configured radio audio, control and timing connections.
Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) ↗Audio between programsRoute audio inside Windows—for example, from an SDR Console receiver into a digital decoder—when that audio path is needed.
JTSync ↗Computer timeSynchronize the PC clock with network time servers. Its WSJT-X decoded-signal timing tools provide an additional option when network time is unavailable.
Fldigi ↗Sound-card digital modesSend and receive supported text-based digital modes through the configured audio connection; used in digital operating and emergency-communications workflows.
Flrig ↗Transceiver CAT controlControl a supported radio from the computer, either independently or with Fldigi and compatible applications. Available controls depend on the radio.

How the Programs Fit Together

  • Listening and exploring: SDR Console operates the external receiver. Explore SDR Console operation →
  • Digital contacts: WSJT-X handles the digital mode; GridTracker adds mapping and activity information. JTSync helps maintain computer time. If WSJT-X uses the transceiver’s own USB audio, a virtual audio cable may not be needed.
  • Audio routing: VAC carries sound between applications. It does not carry CAT commands or protect the SDR during transmission.
  • Radio control: Omni-Rig provides compatible applications with CAT control; VSPE creates or shares serial connections when the chosen arrangement requires it. They serve different roles, and not every setup needs both. See CAT and COM-port references ↓
  • Other digital modes: Fldigi provides the digital modem; Flrig can provide compatible transceiver control. Configure the audio and CAT paths separately, and use one coordinated control arrangement rather than letting competing applications open the same physical COM port.
  • Nets and contests: NetLogger supports net participation; N1MM Logger+ focuses on contest logging. They are optional operating tools rather than receiver drivers.

For installation, keep hardware drivers/APIs, radio control, audio routing and RF/PTT protection separate in your plan. Configure and verify one connection at a time. The links below retain the detailed setup references.

SDR Operating Software

SDR Console is the main interface for the external SDR receivers at W3UJ. These links lead to developer information and downloads.

Software or Support PagePurpose
SDR Console features ↗Capabilities and program overview.
SDR Console downloads ↗Program downloads and current support files; consult this page for receiver-specific files such as RSPdx-R2 support.
SDR Console / SDRplay information ↗SDRplay integration information.
SDRplay software portal ↗SDRplay software entry point; currently redirects to SDRconnect.

Receiver Drivers and Hardware Support

Choose support for the actual receiver connected to the computer. A receiver driver and the radio’s CAT-control interface perform different jobs.

Software or Support PagePurpose
SDRplay Hardware API / Driver ↗Device support for the SDRplay receivers, including RSPduo and RSPdx-R2.
Nooelec NESDR Windows setup ↗Manufacturer setup instructions for the NESDR receiver.
Zadig ↗USB-driver utility referenced by RTL-SDR setup instructions. Use it only for the device specified by those instructions.
RX888 MkII quick start and Cypress driver ↗RX888 Windows installation and driver guidance.
Yaesu FT-991A product support ↗Radio-specific downloads and USB-driver information through the manufacturer’s product page.
Yaesu FTDX10 product support ↗Radio-specific downloads and USB-driver information through the manufacturer’s product page.

SDRplay Setup Applications

SDRconnect ↗ — current SDRplay operating application; useful for verifying receiver detection and reception before moving to SDR Console.

SDRuno installer and manual ↗ — discontinued application with official downloads still available, retained for existing installations and legacy instructions.

SDR Console’s publisher lists SDRconnect, SDRuno, or the standalone API as support-installation routes. Verify compatibility and follow the setup sequence →; running a manufacturer application first is a recommended check rather than a universal prerequisite.

CAT Control and Shared COM Ports

These tools connect applications to the transceiver. They do not replace the SDR receiver driver or physical RF/PTT protection.

Software or Support PagePurpose
Omni-Rig overview and documentation ↗CAT-control interface information and supported radio setup.
Afreet Software downloads ↗The Omni-Rig download source linked in the QRZ instructions.
Virtual Serial Port Emulator — VSPE ↗Virtual serial-port arrangements used when configuring application access to radio control.
SDR Console External Radio ↗Supported transceiver synchronization and control arrangements.

Flrig documentation ↗ — another transceiver-control option, including use with Fldigi and compatible applications. Select the control method supported by your operating software. See all Frequently Used Programs ↑

Digital Modes and Time Synchronization

The radio’s control connection, digital-mode audio, and computer time are separate parts of the setup.

Software or Support PagePurpose
WSJT-X downloads ↗Project download and installation information for FT8 and other supported modes.
JTSync ↗Time-synchronization utility referenced in the station software list.

For application-to-application audio routing, see Virtual Audio Cable (VAC) ↗. This is separate from transceiver CAT control and may be unnecessary when using the radio’s USB sound device directly. Return to Frequently Used Programs ↑

Remote Desktop Access

Splashtop ↗ — remote desktop access used at W3UJ to listen to SDR receivers, adjust SDR Console, and operate WSJT-X on the station PC. Product features and access options vary; use the official site for current downloads and requirements. This is an optional access tool, not a receiver driver or CAT interface.
